New Map - EVE and EVE100
« on: August 08, 2010, 07:43:10 AM »
hi all,
this is my 4th map and i think it is quite the business  ::)

the 100 version is the harder version. you start with 100 seedlingers.
eve is the unofficially titled '200' version.

i had previously considered the 100 version to be impossible, but Ytaker proved me wrong so a big thanks to you, sir.

enjoy...

A good old traditional map with heavy action. Very pleasant to play.
The 100 version took me 3 tries.
Thanks.

You can try it yourself.
First thing is to send 50 seedlings to an enemy asteroid to the west and conquer it.
Plant trees there and on your second asteroid south-west.
Then just wait a bit, till you have another 50 seedlings (or 100 if you wish).
Of course you need to plant a flower and constantly use laser mine.

yes. i see what you mean. to be completely open and honest, im not the rush-oprientated type of gamer at all. i dont like it as a tactic, probably because i think it detracts from proper gameplay. having said that, i tried to 'rush' to capture all the roids to the south, going via the slightly westerly route, and it is easily doable using the annikk technique of planting one tree, moving on, etc.

my maps are therefore probably pretty easy for those who like to play levels fast and hard. ive always been someone who prefers a slightly lengthier game, so my maps probably reflect that.

i see how it is possible to win with fewer seedlings, and im sure those who do have already edited the code to suit their needs. good!

:)

Okay man.
I've played Eve about 5 times and still like it.
Eve and Aeon is my favorites now.
But need new maps to play.
Will wait your next one :)

Love this level. Really nicely balanced and fun to play. I love how close-fought many of the battles turn out. :-D
One of my fave custom levels this.

I do cry a little bit on the inside however everythime I see a custome level that has relinquished the relationship betweem size and asteroid attribute. ;-)

its very interesting that you say this rudolf. its the first ive heard anyone mention this aspect in anything other than mild intrigue as to why i dont always have the send distances proportional to the roid size.
in honesty, i make very few roids with disproportionate values like that, but the few i do, for the most part, are noticeable in some way while playing- an important roid, for example.

i actually quite like it when you come across a send distance, or whatever other value, that is not the norm.
normally, you can tell, roughly, when looking at a roid, that it will have such and such a value or property, but my like for disproportion helps to break down these assumptions. i think thats a good thing, if for no other reason, than to change up one aspect of gameplay.

Also - i too rank Eve and Aeon as my 2 faves of miy own maps.  ::)

ps .. I'm working on the next one...  8)

I mentioned it a bit in my battle report. I found most of them had fairly disproportionate values. The practical game effect meant that I would often be frustrated because I'd push forward to a large planet, and find it had crap stats. In the singleplayer, I'd do that and feel happy and rewarded for finding such a valuable place. The mechanism rewards you- you make a prediction, and it's right.

I like seeing unusual roids as well, but in your game, the assumption is that every asteroid is unusual. You've removed the special feel by going completely the other way. And the large= good small=bad is a good mechanism. It means that just by viewing the asteroids, you can have an idea about which ones are more or less valuable. You can plan your future movements. By removing that element completely, you're giving more power to the random number god, and less to us.

With your mechanism, you make a prediction, and the game punishes you. It punishes you for using your brain.

Haven't played aeon, but yeah, I like Eve. Eve is certainly a great map, and this quibble does not detract from that. I would definitely have prefered that variants were rare, though.

Looking forward to it.
