I must know!! it seems there is some hidden lore.
Who are the growers, how do they look like?
what is their role in all this?

The growers are basically a greater empire of Dyson(if that's correct word for it...) and they have ordered you to conquer and seek out lands further off!

That's what I believe at least :P

The growers may feature again in future games, so I am not sure I want to spoiler that.
Feel free to speculate though, I am actually quite curious what theries people have...

My guess:

All these floral empires are scientific creation of some highly-developed species (maybe even future humans, but may be some other as well)
Purposes may vary:
0) pure experiment;
1) scouting;
2) asteroid elements extraction (kinda advanced mining);
3) if trees change atmosphere like terran trees do it may happen to be terraforming.

I wonder what could happen if seedlings find terran satellite - could they grow on it? ;-)
