Eufloria/Dyson won't work with ATI MOBILITY RADEON
« on: October 28, 2009, 06:11:27 AM »
Hello,

I've tried playing Eufloria and then Dyson on my new laptop, which has an ATI MOBILITY RADEON 4570 (my comp is a Satellite L350 21U by Toshiba).

The games runs, but is very slow (read: unplayable, like less than 2fps) but the sound seems to work ok. I have to click at least 2 or 3 times to activate one button on the main menu. In the option screen I can't see any of the text, everything is white but the scroll bars.

I have attached a screenshot of the main menu and option menu.

Specs: WinXP Pro SP3, Core 2 Duo 2.10Ghz, 3Gb RAM, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 1Gb with drivers that can run Left4Dead and TeamFortress2 (drivers date: 01/12/2008). So I'm guessing it's having a problem with the graphics engine (which is openGL or something, right?). Also nothing else is running in the background, I'm very picky about what runs on my computer.

Could you please try to update to latest 9.10 drivers?

I had the same problem with my ATI X1900. The problem is that there are no current drivers for Win 7 x64 (German RC) and the onboard-drivers seem to be lacking OpenGL-support (checked with GPU Caps Viewer). The 9.8 Legacy driver also refused to work at first. Until I found out, that only the english version of the driver installed correctly.

9600 support was dropped in spring, so the last driver for you is Catalyst 9.3

http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx - here, choose your os and your videocard andit will find the latest compatible driver for you.

Are you guys with ATI cards able to run other openGL applications?

Thanks for the reply Vanger. I'm on it.

Alex: I tried playing Osmos and I have the same problem as with Eufloria. The game runs so slow. I think Osmos uses OpenAL which is probably related to OpenGL. (?)

I'll keep you updated when I have installed the 9.10 drivers.
Also I have to mention that I had to use MobilityDotNET to be able to install those drivers on WinXP.

Osmos is OpenGL too. OpenAL is the audio library btw.

Ah, indeed I was wondering whether that logo was a microphone or not. Thanks for clearing that up. :)

Anyway, I installed Catalyst and 9.9 drivers, because when I install 9.10 drivers, I can only use VGA display mode. I had to use Mod the driver installation files again to be able to install them on WinXP though.
And it doesn't work. Osmos doesn't run smooth either.

I think I'm out of luck with ATI Radeon. It seems they don't handle OpenGL at all. I'm watching the Osmos forums as well, other ATI users have the same problem it seems.

Could you please tell exact model of your laptop?
I've found video drivers for L350 on Toshiba site, but, sadly, only for Intel variants.

Radeons should support OpenGL. If only we could be sure about drivers you use...

My model is a Toshiba Satellite L350. Model number PSLDCE. Native OS: seedty Vista, now it's WinXP SP3. Graphic Card: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 (1Go). CPU: Mobile Dual Core 2100Mhz. Monitor: 17"LCD.

I guess you found those intel drivers on Toshiba support site. But those are nonsense, I don't know why they put those there because they don't seem to be related to this model.

At first I installed the 8.12 ATI drivers from DriverHeavenDownloads (the latest ones compatible with XP) because they were the only ones to work. Even though I still had to modify the setup with the MobilityModder.
Right now the best I can install are the 9.9 drivers (9-9_xp32_dd.exe).

EDIT: I tried checking with GPU Caps Viewer and it seems OpenGL is not handled by this card (it says the renderer model is "GDI Generic").
So it's hopeless. I hope this helps clarify things for other users. Bye!

Not before I installed the 9.8 driver. The native Windows7 drivers have no OpenGL support.

I have an ATI Mobility HD 3400 series, and it runs fine, a.k.a, OpenGL is working.

This is on Win7 RC, 32bit, with ATI Catalyst 9.7 Beta according to the Catalyst Control Panel.

I doubt you really need latest-latest drivers; as long as you have drivers from ATI, which'll add your OpenGL support :)

Interesting.
The problem is I do have official ATI drivers, but running on WinXP.
