Dyson using 183,000 K of memory?
« on: May 25, 2009, 08:48:06 AM »
I came across this game in a Makeuseof article and was intrigued by the concept... so I downloaded it and installed it in 32 Bit Vista on a AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4000+ 2.1 Ghz machine with 4GB of ram.  It dragggged and so I checked my process explorer and it's using waaay too much memory (I'd think...) anyways... later on I installed Windows 7 64 bit...  Clean installation except for AVG, Spybot, Chrome and Firefox (so I know it's not malware or external issues).  Same thing.

I'm very intrigued by this game but it is not working correctly for me I don't think.  Any suggestions?

What graphics card do you have?

Dyson uses a lot of memory. But I don't think that is related to the game running slowly, given the RAM available in your system.

How do the OpenGL demos run? OK?

No.  All but one of them say I need OpenGL 2.0 to get them to run.  The other one is the HW Geometry Instancing it says I need a Geforce 8 or S3 Graphics Chrome 400 series.

So is OpenGL something that I'll have to manually install... or is it something my Video Card even supports?  Is that what the problem is from... not having OpenGL 2?  For what it's worth I can run Fallout 3 albeit a *little* slower than I'd like (on the lowest graphics setting).

I'm not sure what F3 runs in, DirectX or OpenGL. What I've had is a whole lot of reports of Dyson not running properly and nearly all the people have reported having an ATi graphics card. I did some asking around and people told me that ATi GL drivers are pretty bad.

Dyson should run on OpenGL 1.1, as far as I know. I don't use anything modern at all in the rendering. Your card should support it as-is but I think the quality of the OpenGL driver might have an effect on how well it runs. Have you updated your drivers to the latest version? Also maybe have a look around to see if anyone with your card is also having trouble with GL applications. I'd be interested in hearing about what you find out.

Hey, running Dyson on my machine actually takes 244,000k of memory. I'm running Windows 7, and it works wonderfully on an almost identical machine my friend has (using 7 as well), but every time I install and run it, it LAAAAAGS so so sllllooooowwwwww.... making it impossible to play as it only registers one in every 10 mouse clicks. I tried compatibility mode on Vista and XP, but it just crashes when I try that. I have an X64 system, does that make any difference? Anyway, want to clear this up and play, I love this game! I have a gaming system, runs all the Half-Life 2 and other such high demand games flawlessly, so a game as simple as Dyson should work! Thanks for listening!

P.S. I have a Nividia GeForce 9600 GSO with 1 gig of dedicated memory, 2 gigs system memory using an AMD Athalon X2 3.0ghz processor on 64 bit.

That's somewhat similar to what I'm running here. I'm not sure why it's lagging out for you. Sounds odd. Any other info you can tell me? Tried fullscreen?

Just a note to anyone here with an ATI Card with issues with the game...

I was getting less than 1 FPS (Radeon 4850), game was unplayable, like someone mentioned here. I updated my Graphics drivers to the June 2009 ones and the game runs flawlessly now.

Try it out.

Well... he's running a Nvidia, and still lags.... Sounds like game doesn't like AMD architecture? Maybe?
Or it could be vista as well?

I run fine with 2 9800's, 2 GB RAM, Q6600 at 3.4ghz and XP.

I might be AMD architecture... or he might have extremely old drivers?

I don't ever start seeing slowdown until late game with a few thousand seeds.
8800GT, 4 GB Ram, Q9550 3.2 OC, Win7 x64 and XP Pro SP3 x86

[Edit] Regarding the memory usage, my Dyson starts with 250,000k and it rises a bit over the course of a game.  This is on Win7.

Seems like a lot doesn't it? I will see if I can drop it a bit.

It's not really a lot.  Compared to lots of games, even simple ones, it's not that much.  Heck, when I have lots of tabs, a download and two running, and maybe multiple windows of firefox open, it can hit 250,000k easy.   ;D

But I bet it would be helpful for the laptop people or those with only a gig of ram in the long run, and perhaps ease up some room for a little extra spice somewhere  ;)
