Eufloria demo font problems
« on: October 19, 2009, 09:12:18 PM »
Hmm... I'm having technical problems with the demo. I don't appear to be able to see some of the fonts. The main menu looks fine, but I can't see any text in the options or about screens, and quite a lot of the dialogs are coming up blank apart from the OK and Cancel buttons.

It appears that the fonts are there, they just seem to be being rendered in white on white for some reason. When the screen fades out, I can briefly see the text for just a fraction of a second - not long enough to read it, sadly. :-(

The main game's dialog boxes, etc. are all blank too, so I can't play at all. The rest of the game seems to be working fine, just as Dyson did.

Here's a picture of my Options screen:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v328/blerk/EufloriaDemo.jpg

Any ideas?  :-[

Gah that is odd.
Can you post your system spec?

I'm almost embarrassed to because it's so bad. Bear in mind that this is my work machine before you laugh too hard. ;D

Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.40GHz
2Gb memory
XP Professional SP3
DirectX 9.0c

Intel(R) 82945G Express, 224Mb
1280x1024@60 Hz-32 bpp

Dyson 1.20 (and all previous versions) have worked fine on this machine (and still do, I checked). The game itself seems to be running just dandy... except I can't read anything.

Will try it on my laptop when I get home... that's an even worse spec. My computers suck. :D

I confirm this.
Actually, my fault, I should have tried to run it on my old laptop, just to check...

Well, it's the Intel onboard videocard issues.
I'm have the same issues on Celeron 1.5 / 768 / i852GM.

I'd suggest trying to update drivers and pray.
Intel's onboard graphics is more pita than even ATi.

Damn. I already tried to upgrade my video drivers with no luck. Intel's own installers refuse to work because they reckon I've got a 'manufacturer-specific' version of the drivers installed. Checking the manufacturer's driver page (Dell) reveals that I have a newer version of the driver than the one they reckon is 'current'.  :'(

Heh, I once struggled to get 3D working properly on i965 (that was on Linux, though).
I've become an unwilling expert in graphical server internals, libraries dependencies, new versions features, etc.
I've ended buying a second-hand GeForce 9400...

My home machine has an nVidia chipset so hopefully that'll be okay, fingers crossed.

Any ideas if this something that could be fixed later on? I was kind of hoping to play at work. Ahem.  ;D

Lots of people reporting this - I guess I'll have to fix it :P

Likelihood is your card doesn't support vertex arrays... I'll see if I can get vertex buffer support in, that might be better supported.

How can I tell if it does or not? I downloaded the GPU Caps Viewer program that was mentioned in the other thread and... can't make head nor tail of it. :D

What should I be looking for?

Yeah that one might not be so easy to use. Try this one: http://downloads.zdnet.com/abstract.aspx?docid=866335

What I need to know are the extensions supported.

Looking at the screenies on Steam, it seems the problem is in the backgrounds, not the fonts.

In this shot:
http://store.steampowered.com/screenshot/view/41219/0/?size=1024

... the menu at the bottom has a black(ish) background and white text. When I run the demo, the background of that panel (and most of the other in-game panels) is white.

Here's an example shot:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v328/blerk/EufloriaDemo2.jpg

Any help?

There are clearly some textures missing. Whether this is because your video card ran out of memory or whatever, I don't know yet... the answer to "what?" is that textures are missing, rather than that the vertex arrays aren't supported/drawing. The question is "why?".

Well, if it's any consolation the game seems just fine on my laptop at home with an "equally rubbish, no doubt" 64mb GeForce FX Go5200.

Getting the demo running properly, I see what you mean about some textures being missing. The shot I posted in the first post has some very weird looking tree trunks and all kinds of other fine details missing. Bizarre!

Best of luck!

Same problem, Intel integrated graphics and the font isn't showing.

I should buy a decent machine really, but something about the internet just makes me like complaining.

Just going to throw another "me too" on this pile.  Unfortunatly 'get a less seedty machine' isn't an option for me since my PSU exploded and took my tower with it, so any kind of work-around you can hobble together would be greatly appreciated.  Was really looking forward to playing the full version tomorrow when the pre-order activates :(

Do you have a machine around with an onboard video card you can switch over to?  Most newer MoBos have something onboard. One of them might be an intel GPU core >_>

I'll be around pretty much all day if I can assist with running any tests. Drop me a PM on EG or something, I'll only be working. Nothing important, like. :D

Anyway, some sort of shout as to when (if) this is fixed would be good. I love Dyson/Eufloria.

FYI: Same issues on my 17" Apple MacBook Pro 2.8 GHz (June 2009) in a Parallels Desktop Virtual Machine running Vista Business with all latest Service Packs and updates etc. installed.

Dyson 1.2, on the other hand, ran w/o any problem (glad I still have the installer) in the same VM, and also in a Virtual Machine w/ Windows 7 RC1 (32 bit) and also when booting into my XP Professional partition via Bootcamp (all latest drivers, updates and service packs installed).

I was able to play the game, though, albeit with strongly diminished game fun, being not able to read the texts and therefore also unable to change the settings cause I didn't know what the controls did.

I sure hope that you'll be able to find a solution which includes such odd men out like me wanting to play it on that other computer, either in a virtual machine or booting from the Bootcamp partition. Anyway, once you've ported it to Mac OS I'll fersure be happier.

Greetings, Tom in Germany

<edit>

What I forgot to say: Another graphics problem (?) was that there was far too little contrast between the flying units (colony seeds and defense seeds) and the respective background, which makes it very hard to visually check whether I can build etc. Probably the same problem.

Hi guys ! (sorry for my english, I'm french and it's late here  ;D)

First, Congratulations about dev such an odd game, I'm always excited about "new gaming visions" or concepts ! And this one is really a "Darwin's Spiritual Child" in the video-gaming story :)

I'm happy to finally get this really interresting game... But experience exactly the same prob as above... I tryed to post on steam forums, but they are too long to activate my fresh account ^^

So I'm on Steam, trying to run this game on an Intel core 2 duo (e6400), 3Go of RAM, and a nVIDIA 8800GTX (Asus) with the latests drivers (video and others, all is up to date) on XP SP3... and never saw that sort of fonts or textures missing on another game (I got many many games, in and out of steam :p)

EDIT: downloaded the last demo: same effect...

Pretty strange.

I've tested game on Asus EN9800GT,  which is fairly similar to your card (in fact it's rebranded 8800GT) and had no such troubles. Though, it was an AMD-based machine with nVidia chipset...

I'm trying with the demo and noticed one thing: on black BLANK (stupid mistake) squares where it's supposed to be texts, just a small bit of a second after clicking on "ok" I can barely see the text in black "behind" de disapearing square, text vanishing as fast as the square... (the text at the end of a level)

Maybe not a "missing" problem, but a kind of "covering" textures... ?

other thing: the trees. depending on zooming distance, they appears thin (long / medium distance), or "elephant paws" (short distance)

edit: After a better look, the text seems to be white as the square is...

last edit before go to sleep (it's 2h00 AM :p ): Dyson 1.20 works perfectly !  :)

Hope these observations will help you...

Hi, I just found out I have the same problem with my fairly new laptop (inspiron1525). And I believe that some of you failed to mention that other than the font problem, the trees also appear tremendously thicker when zoomed in (http://imgur.com/ozWoV.jpg) and there are colored-fill circles surrounding each asteroids when explored (http://imgur.com/aGzpL.jpg).

Hopefully you can get this fixed soon so I can fully enjoy the game  :D

Yup, it's the font problem.
The Dyson beta worked fine though, so presumably it's something you changed.
And I'm using Steam, if that makes a difference.

As a quick fix, I inverted the colors on the file MPL_00.png in the Resources folder, and it fixes it for the most part! If you do it, just remember to reinvert the colors, or make a backup for the file for when the official fix comes out.

For all who have those "font" probs: Does it always appears with those "thick" trees at close range and those a little too much darkened halos around asteroids ?

Do you guys experience graphic problems like mine other than the font?

EDIT: Yeah I noticed in Blerk's screenshot, his tree also appears thick and has a poorly shaded circle. To be honest, I think the in-game graphic problem is more important than the font.  ;)

I disagree - With bad graphics I can play the game, without the words I haven't a clue whats going on.

I suspect if we fix it on one we will fix it on all cards. The problem seems to be really prevalent on the integrated intel onboard set, so that give us a good starting point. Hang in there, we will find out more and report asap.

Thanks!

Hi guys, I have a temporary solution.

Just invert the Resources/MPL_00.png with some decent image editor.

Here is inverted file and original one named MPL_00_backup.png: http://rghost.ru/download/551563/d114bd20efa655ccf1639fd3b871bab26e90a3d8/MPL_00.rar

If it does not work - http://rghost.ru/551563 and click on MPL_00.rar

Game looks damn ugly, but playable.

Of note...

I had this problem using an NVIDIA GTX 285 the NVIDIA drivers that came with Windows 7 - RC ...

I went to the NVIDIA website and downloaded and installed the updated version 191.07 drivers and the problem went away.

If you are having this problem with an NVIDIA card, you may want to try updating your drivers.  (www.nvidia.com  Updating was easy, Windows 7 didn't even require a reboot.)

Good Luck

Hey guys!

I've been having this problem, and have been waiting these past few days too see if you guys fixed it...

Nothing yet?

What I don't understand is, why the new demo won't run, the old one you had ran perfectly. I'm just really waiting for this fix, so I can buy the game...

On a side note, EXCELLENT work on everything else, I love the game, and would gladly buy it even if it cost double what it is...

But $20 is alright, don't mind me... ;)

So you don't see any text or game just looks ugly, like on attached screen?

It's window 7 with 8600GT and unupdated drivers (after update it's all ok).

All mentioned problems above: much missing texts (seems to be white as "text boxes"), blank boxes, empty options, ugly thick trees at short range, darkened halos... All in final Steam Game AND last "Eufloria" Demo, The last "Dyson" Demo works fine

Same for me. Something isn't showing so I'm getting white text on a white background and some very clunky trees.

I'm on a Dell Latitude D630 laptop with 'Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family' with the driver apparently up to date.

No problems with the previous versions of the game.

Thanks for giving this your attention - it's really appreciated :)

Chiming in here, apologies for posting a new thread before finding this one.  Here's what I wrote.
Just bought it, and most of the text in the menus is missing or the same color as the background.  I went into the options to see if there was anything I could do about it, but I couldn't see anything other than the slider bars.  What the hell?  What should I do?  If there is an option you suggest changing, please give me a screenshot so I can try to click the right places.  The main menu works, and so do a few buttons like "OK", but no other text.  Are the menu boxes supposed to be plain white?  Also, it makes any other programs lag pretty badly.  It's way worse than many more complicated games I play.  I'm kind of annoyed now.  I've played some buggy games, but Dyson has never been on par in that respect with other projects on the same scale.  And now I've gone and paid twenty bucks, and it's got such a basic problem that I can't even see if it was worth it.
I'm running Vista Home Premium 32-bit
Dual Intel Pentium T2390 1.86ghz processors
Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset Family, driver version 7.14.10.1329

EDIT: attempting to update my driver, but it's being a ROYAL pain in the ass and has taken me more than an hour to find the right file because Intel appears to no longer support my exact chipset.  There's another problem that seems to be linked to my driver and chipset (from experience with another game), so maybe both will be fixed.

Looks like I'm not the only one, and it's not the only SERIOUS seedING ISSUE either.  My suggestion: Don't start selling something until it works.  Seriously.  I could have waited a few extra weeks or a month or two if that would mean you could have released a program that works right.  Slap me for buying before trying the trial, but Dyson 1.2 had nothing on this scale.
Sorry if I sound too pissed off.  It might be more my continuing driver-update ordeal than this program that's making me yell and rant.  This particular driver is so elusive that it's everything I can do just stopping myself from breaking things that would be hard to replace.  Several inconsequential objects around me have already met their demise by knife point.  RAEG

Just kidding.

If you want to blame someone - blame me. I wanted to test Eufloria on my old and crackling notebook with Intel onboard, but never had time for it.

What I don't understand is why the Dyson 1.2 demo works flawlessly, whereas Eufloria consists at least three different graphical problems for intel users. Aren't they both using the same graphic engine? In fact, isn't this just a 2D game? :/

P.S  Are there any news on the 2.02 update yet? Sorry, I'm kinda getting impatient  ::)

I know, right? I used to play 1.2 like a biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiish all day... Flawlessly.

But just have patience... at least they've made it into a top priority.

HOWEVER, they better hurry up too, or I'm gonna have to go back to Galcon... which I suck at, it's just so fast... Like Borderlands...

Just another voice in the throng here, hoping you'll resolve this asap.

I've loved Dyson from the first release, told all my friends, and pre-ordered on steam, FWIW.

Of course, both the machine I normally use and my netbook feature . . . integrated intel graphics cards.  =(

On the topic of netbooks, can't you borrow or buy a netbook with intel graphics?  I only mention buy because I see refurbs going for <$200 semi-regularly on the deal forums I read.

Hope your real life issues get resolved, and that you have a chance to fix this soon as well,

Can you not send previous versions of Eufloria to someone with Intel graphics, until you identify which versions are affected and then work out what changes were made in those versions to find where the problem is?

Please get this sorted soon I'd love to play on my eeepc 901  ::)

I see the same problems on my Acer Aspire 5735 notebook with integrated Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset (dialog windows have no text/borders - it's all white, options page just displays sliders, no text etc).

I'm more than happy to take any trial patches and let Alex (?) know if they work on my machine. Admins, send me an email if you want to take me up on this.

Annoying, because I just heard about Eufloria, so uninstalled my old Dyson game, then installed Eufloria demo and found it doesn't work!

Here's a thought: Why should he be responsible for testing on YOUR specs?  Shouldn't you have tested it with the up-to-date demo if you were so worried about something working /flawlessly/ out of the box?

They're working on fixing YOUR problem, and they're doing it for free.  Sit down and STFU.

Wow.. At least these guys are working on the issue. Have you ever played Fallout 3 on the PC? That game will crash repeatedly for seemingly no reason, and from what I can gather, it's been this way since release. And, that game was developed by a full-blown development company.

Here, you have an indie game developed solely by two people. You should have expected some flaw in the game. If you're going to complain, couldn't you at least post your system specifications, even if they are the exact same as another user's? It would show at least some effort to try and help out. For all the developers know, the issue causing the problem could be completely unrelated to graphics cards. Rudolf and Alex need all the help they can get to get a quick fix on this issue.

A little off topic but Fallout 3 stability is appalling. I actually mapped the quicksave to a mouse button because I was saving so often! It's why I don't play it that much.

I have mailed this guy for his refund, but I do want to defend myself slightly here.

I'm just one guy. At the moment I am separating from my wife and she is packing her things, so I can't stay in my flat. I am staying wherever I can and don't have much access to the internet apart from when I am at my full time job. I get one hour a day at the moment to work on this bug, during my lunch.

Games sometimes ship with bugs. Eufloria shipped on 20th Oct, which is nearly three weeks ago now. I appreciate that's a long time to wait for a class A bug fix like this, but the circumstances are different to a lot of other developers.

I am really really sorry this has affected so many people, and I am working to fix the bug.

Anyone who has this bug and wants a refund, and bought the game from us, can have one. No problem :)

Here's a thought: Why should he be responsible for testing on YOUR specs?  Shouldn't you have tested it with the up-to-date demo if you were so worried about something working /flawlessly/ out of the box?

They're working on fixing YOUR problem, and they're doing it for free.  Sit down and STFU.

lmao mate i just want some decent customer support. why the hell should i pay for something that worked perfectly fine in earlier versions and doesent work on full release. oh any btw dickhead guess what alex said??? go on guess??? can i get my money back???? comeone bro guess?

NOOOOO I CANT. awesome right?

and did it have anything to do with you when i made the post? did i ask for your opinion? no i didnt you flamebaiting troll of a man.
oh and alex much respect for an awesome game but comeon dude look at the response ive gotten lol. i know youve basicly developed your game and its your baby and aparently it sounds like your going through some bs in your personal life (women.....) but this is unjustified. very much like you i work very hard and i dont think it fair for people to shoot me down because im angry about something IVE paid for that in no way concerns them at all. this sucks very much.

and on another complaining note because im on a roll and i KNOW i wont see any of my money back. ive never ever been talked to like that on a troubleshooting thread lmfao. but hey each game to his own right if you want to allow that go hard.

Calm down. These are just natural responses to what was quite a rude post of yours (which I completely understand by the way, I would be angry too). I also cannot be held responsible for what other people say to you, so don't put that on me. If you wanted to voice your grievances personally, you could have sent me a personal message or emailed us. You chose to use the public forum for your communication, so you can lie in the bed you made.

Regarding the refund, I assume from your post that you bought the game on Steam. I should point out that while it may not have been there at first, the Steam page does actually say that the game is currently incompatible with onboard Intel graphics.

Everyone needs to calm down right now.

I am working on the bug fix.

We're two indie guys. Rudolf has gone on holiday for three weeks. I work full time. I am sorry that our customer support isn't as good as EA's, but it is a different situation.

vansie is correct insofar as it is bad to release a game that has quite a large bug in it like this. I think it is reasonable to expect a fix as being included in the price paid for the software.

Re. Alex:

Sorry to hear that your personal life is f* up, probably not at least because you are spending a lot of time on hobbies like compute game programming ;-)

Anyways, I think your game is totally amazing, concept, athmosphere, fun - congratulations and thanks a lot! Well worth the couple of bucks you ask for it, enjoying every second I spend playing it.

Intel graphics issue: I have the same problem (and wait for the bug fix so I can also play it when "on the move")

Re. vansie:

I guess you were lucky enough to never have had troubles with a computer program (or anything else) in your live (how old are you - 15?) not to speak about having developped anything on your own.

I hardly find words for you... are you familiar with the strange thing called "real live"? you complain in the weidrest way about some problems with something that costs 15 bucks - and runs on a PC. Just try to address a similar concern to microsoft the way you expressed yourself (or any other company).

And before you complain any further - get familiar with basic law principles in developped countries: If you want to claim refund or impairment you have to give the manufacturer a reasonable chance and time to remedy deficiencies (which I would say is still well within the limits given the specific circumstances).

I was actually tempted to offer you refund from my own pocket for you to shut up but on the other hand: just grow up and stop complaining.

I'm going to have to say that this topic needs to be locked. It's degenerated into an argument that isn't fixing anything, and now people are just getting angry over something that is being worked on as fast as it can be.

Come on people, can't we get along?  :)

And sorry to hear about your seperation Alex.

All patches are available on the front page of the website <a href=http://www.dyson-game.com/>here</a>. Eufloria checks for updates as well, and will notify you via small text at the bottom of the game window (though I doubt people with the issue mentioned will be able to see it :()

Alternatively, I'm sure there will be a forum announcement for this patch, and I would suggest that all e-mail addresses collected from billing be sent a message informing users of this fix, if they are saved.

Running on a Lenovo S10 netbook, with the integrated Intel gfx, and Windows 7, and have the font and other gfx issues as well.

I would never get angry over a indie game having a bug like this, so long as the dev can eventually fix the problem.  Asking for a refund would just be a dick move honestly.  Now Fallout 3 crashing on the other hand...

Take the time to get your personal life in order, don't worry about us bitchy, whiney gamers who complain about bugs.  I hope your at least making money off this game too.

Alex,

I know you're going through a rough time, but would it be possible to get even a tiny update about any progress you're making (or not) on this issue?  Thanks,

Greg

Hey guys, thanks for the support. I'm still working on this, having some trouble identifying the cause though. I will be doing some more thorough checking over the next few days hopefully.

Hey Alex, I just wanted to say that I'm really excited about this game and I'm ready to spend my $20 as soon as this bug is fixed, and it sounds like I may not the be the only one, so at least you should get some more sales from your efforts on this particular bug! :)

Unfortunately I have these symptoms on both my machines so I haven't been able to experience the game yet.  One has an mobile Intel 965 (Windows 7) and the other is actually an ATI Radeon Mobility 1400 (Vista).  I thought it odd that most people on this thread were talking about Intel problems when it also occurred with my machine with the ATI card.  I'll post more detailed specs in a moment on that computer, since I don't have access to it at the moment.

Just a heads up that I think I fixed this. I will mail a few testers and then we should have a patch up soon if it's fixed.

Doesn't find the server for download :(

[Several minutes later] Oh, now I find that the links are bad:
Quote
http://"http://www.dyson-game.com/files/PatchEufloria.exe"
There are double "http" and superfluous quotation marks in your links.

These links will work fine:

Patch for the full game (installer)
Patch for the demo (installer)

Will this patch be uploaded to steam so that it automatically downloads?  I don't know how to modify my game files around steam itself.

Go to the website and download the "Patch for the full game (binary)". It contains the changed files in a zip archive. Unpack these files into the folder C:/Program Files/Steam/steamapps/common/eufloria/ and overwrite the existing files (if youre not sure, back up that whole folder before doing this).

This is how i did it and it worked without any trouble.

There's still a slight problem - when I open the game straight into fullscreen mode slightly more than half the screen is left blank. If I go to the desktop then back without closing the game it goes back to normal. Something similar happened with the Dyson demos.
