RingDesigner - Map Editor
« on: July 30, 2011, 01:09:38 AM »
Are you ready for...

RingDesigner is a complete map editor which grants you the power to create maps very easy, either if it is on screen or when you look at the map code!

To start making maps, download and play it as a normal Eufloria Map :)

The controls are the same as RoidForge, if you haven't seen it:

1.  Left click one of the tools in the top left.
2.  Left-click to add and remove asteroids, or click-and-drag an existing asteroid when modifying its position, size and send distance.
3.  If you want to select an asteroid without changing its properties, right-click it.

Thanks to Annikk.exe for making RoidForge in the first place, giving me a start, although I have written everything myself(except for some copy/paste snippets:P)
And thanks to Mihhaelo for acknowledging me about GetFactionColour(), not that I entirely understand it yet either :P

WARNING: When using RingDesigner, you'll need to restart the game after useage! For some reason when going from RingDesigner directly over to another map, you spawn asteroids whenever you click!!!
I hope I got you warned!

Somewhat a tutorial exist here, it has a very deep explanation on pictures!

Really fantastic and brilliant! This is what happens when a giant stands on the shoulders of a giant, I guess.

Just a suggestion for the next upgrade: It would be so great to have a  small digital display somewhere showing the actual values not already displayed (senddistance, radius)  being adjusted or implemented in real-time; but maybe that is just messing with perfection.

The generous investment in time and innovation I see in improving this game by people in this forum blows my mind.

Who's the giants and who is standing on which gient? o.O

And what do you mean by display? If you hover over the asteroid you'll see the values? Explain :)

Imma guessing you stood on Annikk. You expanded on RoidForge, hence standing on his shoulders.

It's a variation of a quote (supposedly) spoken by Newton: "If I have seen further it is by standing on the soulders of giants."

I just meant in a future update perhaps showing the actual values of the radius, senddistance,  and coordinates as they are being adjusted. Unless I am not seeing something, it would be good to know what these values are without having to wait until the map file has been created. Right now, I have no way of knowing what radius or senddistance I am creating. So, it is hard to envision how the seedlings will interact within the map. Is the radius of the asteroid I just created 10, 100, 1000?  I can't tell. I'm sure as I experiment in the future, and learn how big the grid sectors are, it will become more intuitive. Just a suggestion for a future version since I don't have the ability to do it myself!

Hehe, developement on the forum gets better, but I guess 3D cubes in masses are far off, they'll cause alot of lag sadly :/

That makes me wonder, is Annikk still trying to finish that 3D engline he made?

DO IT! :D

Aino,

Thanks to your efforts, I was able to modify your code to resemble something closer to what I was envisioning. Personally, it works a little better for me, and may be an alternative others might find useful as well. It doesn't seem to harm the overall functioning as far as I can tell. If you disapprove I'll delete this post.

Changes:

Repositioned Asteroid Stats
Repositioned and screen-centered Current Tool-Pick Label
Eliminated Tool-Highlighted Text
Added Mouse Coordinates
Text Color changes with Faction Ownership
Text Size Adjusts with Screen Size
Files are saved with Session Number and Date-stamped so you can easily save multiple versions while working -- NEW
File Name/Session Number is displayed when you save your work -- NEW

Nice! I can see if I can get some of this into my own, since the stats atleast is so frickin' annoying, I say... I shouldn't have made it that way <.<

Edit: I wonder of one thing, was it easy to work with the system/ change it?

Yes, it was quite easy to modify since I was mostly using your information. If you hadn't added the stats in the first place it would've taken me forever to figure it out, if ever.

Cute Dog, BTW.

I've been thinking, I might implent an easy way to do gravity, just drag lines and test for result :D

The test will be in the editor, so you can see if it behaves how you wanted, else back to drawingboard!

I can't promise anything though :/

New update, nothing big though, but very useful!

I'm always thinking of making that gravity thing, lots of more people would use it too if it was easier to implent. And when I'm thinking of it all that time it'll be added, but not certain when!

Heres some cool things I'll add to vizualize the Gravity, I've always wanted to make this!

Ignore the arrow flying through meaning light being affected by gravity(very strong gravity then!)

I hope you see what I mean :P

It won't have that many grids, and it will only be active on the current selected asteroid :)

It won't take that long time either, I'll use Cosand Sin to calculate where the angle of the start for each grid, then I'll multiplay it by the formula used for calculating gravtitaional force to extent the grid to show how far the gravity is efficient :)

A real time grid to show the strength of gravity in a level would be _awesome_.  :>  You could probably use the 3D engine to make the grid.  That's a super-ambitious project, but if it works it would be freaking awesome. :>

IDK, how do you bend a straight line?

It would be super ambitious and super cool indeed, but it's impossible to do in Eufloria D:

And I don't think I'll make it before 19:00 PM today(local time, +1) or 18:00 London Time :)

You could use DrawSprite to draw circles that are spaced according to the strength of gravity, kinda like contour lines on a map.

EDIT: Or a circle drawn in the 3D engine, either way.

Draw several straight lines, each at a slightly different angle...

Eufloria normally uses straight lines, which change direction occasionally(If you zoom in the planet SendRadius circle, you can see that it is far from a circle), to produce the effect of curve lines.

For annikk.exe idea, here some python code that does that:

Code: [Select]
#! /usr/bin/env python

import pygame
from sys import argv

#width, height = int(argv[1]), int(argv[2])

width, height = 1024, 768

screen = pygame.display.set_mode((width, height))

white = (255, 255, 255)
green = (0, 255, 0)
red = (255, 0, 0)
blue = (0, 0, 255)

def draw_lines(num, width, height, color):
     for line in range(num+1):
          pygame.draw.aaline(screen, color, (0, line*(height/num)), (width-line*(width/num), 0))
          pygame.draw.aaline(screen, color, (0, height-line*(height/num)), (width-line*(width/num), height))
          pygame.draw.aaline(screen, color, (width-line*(width/num), 0), (width, height-line*(height/num)))
          pygame.draw.aaline(screen, color, (width, line*(height/num)), (width-line*(width/num), height))

while True:
     event = pygame.event.poll()
     if event.type == pygame.QUIT:
          break
     screen.fill((28, 28, 28))
     draw_lines(50, width, height, white)
     pygame.display.flip()

However, working on a tool that (may) allow procedural circles.

Hokay... done, I think.

It works much the same as DrawPoly(), but requires a little more work to use. Whereas DrawPoly() required the points to be setup before running the level, this can calculate them at runtime, though it can only produce regular polygons.

To use it, call RegPolyTemplate(). The paramenters are fairly self-explanatory, but...

name  --> The name of the template.
numsides --> The number of sides
radius --> The distance from the center of the shape to the top corner. This should be the same for every corner, but rounding errors may creep in.

To draw a shape, call DrawRegPolyTemplate().

name  --> The name of the template.
r,g,b,a --> Colour and alpha values of the shape.
thick --> line thickness
centerX, centerY  --> The coordinates of the shape's center.

To change a template, simply call RegPolyTemplate() and supply the name of the template to edit and what you want to change it to. To delete a template run polyplates[name] = nil

I think that's it. More sides to a shape will make it seem rounder, and should only be processor-heavy when running RegPolyTemplate(), and even then if you want a massively high-sided shape.

If a problem is "between someone's ears", it means that the problem is caused by the person, rather than the object/program. They may be being stupid (eg expecting a black-and-white printer to print colours) or they may really not have understood (I think this may happened here, if at all).

It is sometimes known as a PEBKAC error or an ID-10-T error, sometimes nastily, sometimes not.

I finally got around to fixing Polyplates.
Attached is a corrected demo including both DrawPoly and PolyPlates functions.
Thanks Pilchard123, wherever you are!

Just here! I still check in now and again to see what's going on. It's a shame that it's so quiet around now :(

Agreed! I've been trying to follow the Eufloria RPG Pivotal Tracker but it is hard to determine any potential release date. I still play Classic Eufloria frequently- mostly AI scenarios with Eclipse B. I'll post some "final" utilities I've developed soon and an updated version of Eclipse B. Why? Just for the heck of it, I guess. Maybe someone besides myself would find them useful some day. I look back fondly to when our modding community was active and wonder what everyone is up to these days.

You can watch the progress of the game development somewhat. Unfortunately I don't understand most of it but it's fun to look at.
