HI!
Dyson tree is excellent game!
But can it be translated?

I saw Resources\tutorial.xml and tried to change one word to non-english. I tried various encoding (UTF8, windows-1251 and unicode chars representation like А). And i accurate written encoding="..." in first xml line according to xml standart. XML validator and web browsers open it easy, but dyson.exe throws error: "An exception 'System.Exception' has occured in Dyson.exe"

If it possible, it would be nice if you will add possibility to non-english peoples to translate tutorial and UI to other languages.

Thanx!

Ok. Continue talking with myself :(
I hope to find more suitable font.

Windows TTF font not works. Font with 2 files needed - .fnt (xml inside) and .png (chars pictures).

But not all UI strings contained in xml files - many of them hardcoded in Dyson.exe (menu, font name, etc).
So developers help needed anyway.

Hi topmo3,

Sorry for the late reply - we'll be getting all text strings into an xml soon. Which language would you be translating to?

In terms of fonts we'll be using a smoother font soon I think, it makes everything more readable and fits with the game's aesthetic anyway. Watch this space.

Some weeks ago, I asked Alex to translate it into german.
So, as soon as every text in the game is put into text files, I'll start translating Dyson. I guess it will take me one week.

Alex, thanx for reply and attention.
I will try to translate the game to russian. I am not good translator, but this game so fascinate me, so i want to try to make more peoples to share my sense. This game have not as many tactics and complex strategy as other RTS, but it is very attractive - gameplay, sound and graphics all are harmony.

It would be very good (for foreigners :) ) if that font will be unicode. If it possible, of course.

Alex,
can you explain "Dyson tree" name? Why "Dyson"?
While translating "defence tree" is easy, but "dyson" not in dictionaries :)
May be, i will not translate it and leave it as is.

It may be best to not translate them. Alternatively they could be partially translated:  "Dyson <translated word for tree>"

Yes, the word Dyson is a proper noun, so it doesn't need to be translated.

Alex, Rudolf, thanx for new version 1.10
New unicode font is very good, and now translated tutorial.xml readed and showed by Dyson.exe without any problem!
Now just hardcoded strings and menu can't be translated.

String export is on the to-do list - we'll have a spreadsheet that contains all the strings and can export it as a game-readable file.

As I start translating the tutorial into german, the game does not start anymore and crashes after loading, when I edit and save the tutorial.xml.
The game or the Fonttype still has problems with german characters like ÄÖÜ.
When I type in "Flügel" (Wings), the game crashes but when I type in "Flugel", then the game starts.

AriesT, you are right - Dyson, for unknow reason, don't support unicode (utf8) encopded xml, even properly formed (imho).
But it understand 8-bit encoding. For example you can use windows-1252 for german.
In attach tutorial.xml works for me. It have ÄÖÜ right after first words "HOW TO PLAY ÄÖÜ" and it properly displayed in my russian windows :)

Sorry, i am too hurry
Dyson support utf-8 encoding in tutorial.xml
Attached tutorial.xml in utf-8 with "HOW TO PLAY ÄÖÜ" works even for my russian windows xp

It is actually the game tutorial.xml which topmo3 got.
It doesn't matter if I type Flügel or ÄÖÜ after HOW TO PLAY, the game crashes in both cases.
Damn unicode!  >:(

I attached the error message though it is in german. Maybe this could help.

I found the solution for my problem. In the original xml file, the "encoding=utf8" command is missing in the tag at the top. Now I can translate the game.

When the translated versions are finished, Alex has to integrate a switch and a folder for all the translations, so we can offer one multilingual version instead of 5 specific ones. :)

AriesT,
if you unlike unicode, you can use windows-1252
both my attached files at previous page are working and have encode= attribute, you can just try it as-is :)
good luck!

We currently have a large amount of text in the game that is inaccessible to translators. I'll be working on a fix for that soon, until then the files to translate are level*.level and tutorial.xml in the Resources directory - and I guess the readme. But until all the text is extracted from the game into data files we won't be able to translate the entire thing, sorry  :-\

The point is that since most of this text is very likely to change in the future, I'm reluctant to encourage people to translate it right now; once we know what we have is more final, it will make more sense to translate it. However, it's nice for people around the world to be able to play it now, so I'll try to get a text data file sorted soon.

And, the most important question: Ou est le Mc Donalds?  ;D

..

I guess Alex and Rudolph will make the next non-hard coded version (so the options text is editable) of the game after the IGF. Just make your game perfect and THEN let us translate it. :)

So, I'm Russian too, and i've made my own translation of tutorial into Russian. I hope, that russian-speaking people will enjoy it.

Eigentlich bin ich schon für die dt. Übersetzung "gebucht".
Aber, wie geil, wir machen das danach mal als Gag. Nachdem ich das Spiel übersetzt habe (soll ja noch sehr viel an Text dazu kommen), machen wir deutsche Dialekte dazu.  ;D
Isch mach des in hessisch und du mächst des in boarisch!  :P

In Englisch:
I told him that it is a funny idea to translate the game into bavarian dialect. I made him the offer to translate it into several german dialects (me hessian, he bavarian) as soon as I will have translated the final version, including all the unfinished text. Just as a joke. :D

You can also learn german when listening to Uwe Boll or the Na*is in Wolfenstein 3D.
"Halt, GESTAPO!" *BAM* "MEIN LEBEN!"  I love this game.  ;D
Or just visit the Oktoberfest and learn some bavarian.

I guess Dyson will be the independent game with the most translations before the game will be released in its final version.  :o

Cheers :)

if you press printscreen (or alt-printscreen) Windows takes a screenshot. You can then paste this into whatever, Paint, GIMP, Photoshop or whatever paint package you use. In-game screenshot button is something I do want to get in eventually.

*Cough* Tinypic, Imageshack *Cough*

After you saved the screenshot, go in imageshack/tinypic then upload your picture in it. I would recommend using tinypic. Then after they uploaded it, it should show something like : IMG Code for Forums & Message Boards.

Copy the code then post it in the forum.

1) First, go to the place where you want to take a screenshot.

2)Then, press Print Screen which should be above Insert and at F12's right.

3)After that, go in a program like paint which is located in accessory in all programs. Press CTRL+V simultaneously which should paste the image in paint.

4)Save it then go in Internet then google TinyPic. Enter in it then upload your picture in it.

5)After it is finished uploading, there should be a code below an " IMG Code for Forum & Message Boards. Copy the code then post it in the forum.

There, that should do it.

и ещё у меня с граматикой не очень хорошо, так что кто сможет перевести на англ полание админу, в общем, надо бы из .exe вытащить все картинки и текст скажем в Dyson/image Dyson/text да и не мешало бы сделать Dyson/music и запихать туда всю музыку. да и с уровнями надо что то подобное сделать, а в игре поставить проверку на количество .level файлов и если больше скажем шести, то делать скролинг(прокрутку)

Forgive me, my grammar bad, therefore can who can translate into English. Here transfer by means of the program

It would be necessary from.exe to pull out all pictures and the text we will tell in Dyson/image Dyson/text and it would be advisable to make Dyson/music and to push there all music. And with levels that is necessary that similar to make, and in game to put check on quantity.level files and if we will tell six more to do скролинг (scrolling)

I could translate this into English! ;)

Seriously though - I could translate into Slovene (NOT Slovakian... I hate it when people mix those up), my native language;

although I must admit that while I know what all the english words mean, I don't know the Slovene equivalents for some. That's because I don't "translate" english in my head, I just read it directly - I guess you could say English is my other native language, all thanks to me using computers my whole life - there isn't much Slovene software, and software that is Slovene is usually poorly translated, so I prefer English anyways...
I'll do some browsing/searching [the dictionary] if I have to, though.

EDIT:
I've made a quick translation of tutorial.xml...
It isn't much and it probably could have been done better, but this was done in a hurry since it isn't the "final" version of the tutorial, so there's no point in making a complete translation.
I'll put more effort into it for the final version of the software.

Here it is:
XML: http://soulbreakers.com/usr/darkman/dyson/tutorial.xml (right click to save, although I doubt that anyone's from Slovenia here)
Preview images:
http://soulbreakers.com/usr/darkman/dyson/dyson-howto.png
http://soulbreakers.com/usr/darkman/dyson/dyson-controls.png
http://soulbreakers.com/usr/darkman/dyson/dyson-seeds.png
http://soulbreakers.com/usr/darkman/dyson/dyson-keys.png

PS: Yes, I realize that this translation is rather similar to Serbian, but the languages are similar, too :) (not so similar that only one of the translations would work, though)

By the way, if you edit files - be sure to save it in UTF-8 codepage.

If you save it in ANSI encoding, Dyson will show you a long trail of errors.

Swarmaster volunteered to help with the portuguese translation and, considering he is Brazilian and I am Portuguese, we thought it would be a nice idea to make two portuguese translations: pt-pt and pt-br. I guess that should be added to the list. :)
We are probably going to keep in touch as we advance, though, in order to preserve some consistency.

We would stop speaking (writing ;)) russian here, but as for me - I just don't know any russian board. As I see - there are many russian people here, but they have two problems:
1.We have no separate russian board on Dyson. (Or nobody knows about it)
2. Every russian player tries to creae his own translation. ;D

Well, I don't think that Russian board would be very active.

When Dyson will get proper i18n there would be sense in separate board for the translators, to work on translation consistency.

Personally, I hate forums with long list of almost dead French, Castilian, Albanian, Serbian, Putunhua, etc subforums.

Yep - please don't go to too much effort until we finalise the game text :) What's there now is highly likely to change.

Also please feel free to post in Russian if you don't feel the need for anyone non-Russian-speaking to read the post.

А я только предложить хотел на русский перевести  :D
А тут таких уже куча..Вообщем если когда нибудь решитесь переводить по нормальному то надо все текстовые строки в отдельный файлик выносить а их в дальнейшем на спец ресурс типа http://notabenoid.com/
Sorry but we also have interface which also need in translate...
For now to successful translate we need to have some file with all text lines (which not present in levels...)
Also i think that text lines in original levels can be also replaced with something like #MSG10 #MSG11 etc. If someone want to
After that you need to extract all lines in one file (Maybe .ini or xml file with special blocks). And this file will be translated to other language.

Quit=Quit
Quit=Выход
#MSG10=Something else
#MSG10=Что нибудь еще

I18n is not the highest priority, as I understand.

Вроде им не хватает сил на полноценную интернационализацию.
В любом случае - профит они будут иметь только с англоязычного рынка, так что им это не приоритет.

I hope Alex will tell us soon how the current status is in excluding the text strings out of the .exe file.
And yes, it would be really good if we could have one text file for each language in the end. I guess this is how they will do it (probably).
Therefore I stopped translating when Alex told me that nothing is final.

Translating now is likely to be a zero-sum task, since so much is going to change. I will go out on a limb, though, and suggest that compiling a list of "Dyson phrases" would be as useful down-the-line as it is now.
