Level 17: Hide and Seek
« on: November 30, 2010, 09:52:05 AM »
Maybe I'm missing something entirely, but I can't get past the Hide and Seek level.  The game tells me that I can't stay on my home base, and I must flee...but...I can't GET anywhere that doesn't already have 50+ enemies.  And they destroy me in seconds.  And then my home base gets taken. And I lose.  Even if I head to the planet of the empire who attacked me (whose base is now empty), they just take my planet, then come back for me (and usually left a mine plant on their home planet, too).

Mh, I’ve also tried to win this level perhaps 7 times, no chance. No fun. BTW IIRC it is level 18.

I'll look into it, it seems weird as I have won this level many times. Maybe a bug snuck into my level code.
Will report back asap.

Edit:
Just now I played hide and seek twice and won twice. I think the only time it is unwinnable is when the asteroid of the first invasion force has already planted a defense tree by the time you arrive.

Also, I assume you mean level 18, not 17?

Mh, I played 7 times, every time the enemy had planted a defense tree, and after I had conquered that asteroid only few of my seedlings were left.

I, too, am having a LOT of difficulty on this level. I don't know how may times I have attempted it (more than 7) but I cannot come up with anything that works. I thought it was me - maybe not? :)
It's definitely put a damper on the game for me - I had been steaming ahead.
 :P
Beautiful game, btw. Love it.

Seems I may have misjudged that level's difficulty then. :-(

There may be a goood way to deal with difficulty spikes soon, so before I try to tweak the level yet again let me investigate something.
If all goes well we will have an easy/challenging option for the game soon, and with a bit of luck players can choose between them at any point in the campaign. I need to cchek on that last point though.

Worst case scenario is that I provide a hack, so either way you will be able too get past this.

Spoilered for those that don't want to know it. Use only in extreme circumstances as this will mess up achievments and stuff. It causes the game to belive that you won the level even if you are just about to lose.

It's not that it's hard.  It's not a difficulty spike.  It's just an unpredictable chance that the level may be impossible in any given play-through.  Either completely reasonable or completely impossible depending on what the AI does.  The AIs seemed to be more under control in earlier versions - perhaps their new decision-making ability is running amok in this level?  They never made the attack/retreat moves that they do in 2.06.  The enemies that are supposed to be docile and immobile except for scripted moves will occasionally send out attacks and immediately retreat when the seedlings get there.

 ???

That is one really really impossible level .. :(

I have lost the count of how many times I tried  :(

They are too aggressive, and too many defensive trees...

You guys that have successfully passed the level .. what strategy did you used?

I have tried:

- Not to spend seeds in trees...
- Speed all the seed's in Dyson trees (to try to increase quickly the numbers...
- A mix of defensive and Dyson ...

Not a single success ... I'm getting frustrated here :(

Any clues?

(What is that about DevMod?
I get the errors:
chunk: unexpected end in precompiled chunk
and
[string "chunk"]:1: unexpected symbol near 'char(4)'
.... )

Same experience here, as often told. Methinks this level really should also be changed to be winnable in the new game mode, too. Hard level is OK, but level w/o a chance is bad. I have yet to read a report of anybody like, “Yes, I beat this map in 2.07 in the new game mode!”

All other “campaign” levels I was able to win in the new mode, and most of them at first attempt (OK, having played all levels perhaps a dozen times I think I know enough about them to do so). Haven’t yet completely played thru DM mode and Arenas in the new mode, though.

Stumbled across this forum after having no luck with this level...it truly is impossible...the enemies move to whichever planet you're trying to setup on too fast. if you land on a planet that has a defence tree...you'll expend all but 2-5 of your seedlings trying to take it...and then you're screwed, because after about a min the enemy seedlings move back.

Hope you guys fix this soon.

Good one :D

Yes, it’s definitely easier in the “classic” game mode, it is WINNABLE there.

@abs: The option to switch game modes is in the options menu of 2.07.

I've spent the last two days trying to beat this level but to no avail. So I went looking for some help and found this string.  I don't want a cheat; just a way to get through this level. From previous replies, it seems a fix has been put in place, but I can't get passed it. I've tried everything. Any advice would be great!!

I the options menu (I think), there is an option to change game mode. Switch on classic mode, and it might be easier.

Yep, tried that too; changd to "relaxed" but still impossible.  I tried a half dozen time and they kill me every time. If I build up the far asteroid and wit till I have an army, they kill me before I can get out. Or, the plant defense trees  on the adjacent asteroid and I can't get out. If I make it to the other side to "find friends", I'm so weak they kill me. I'm about ready to quit.  I've beat all the skirmish levels and have played dark mode almost up to this level.

In the very beginning, do not plant any trees right away. Prepare to send your seedlings to the attacking asteroid the INSTANT you see them move toward your asteroid. AS SOON AS you capture the new asteroid, IMMEDIATELY send ONE seedling to the outer asteroid containing your reinforcements. AS SOON AS you reveal the new seedlings, send them to your other asteroid as reinforcement. Depending on how quickly you have moved so far, the scripting behavior seems to be less predictable from this point forward.

My success at this level follows this basic strategy:

Try to keep a minimum of 25 seedlings available at all times to attack an unoccupied asteroid, building Dyson trees when possible on your strongest asteroid (in order to create the strongest seedling force possible). If you have a flower, plant it on the strongest asteroid to build enhanced seedlings- I wouldn't waste time on Defensive trees on this level. Be patient. Allow the other factions to attack each other and become weaker in number. If they abandon an asteroid and you have enough seedlings, attempt to take over the abandoned asteroid. They will be too busy attacking the other asteroid to defend the one they just left- but you must be quick. AS SOON AS you capture another asteroid, send a SINGLE seedling to the newly-reachable outer asteroid to reveal your additional reinforcements. Don't waste seedlings building trees on the weaker, outer asteroids. Always be prepared to retreat if necessary, and re-attack if the opportunity arises. Since you start out so weak, every seedling is precious. If one of your asteroids is under attack by a superior force, and you have retreated, remember that it is still generating seedlings until it is captured. Keep dragging the newly-born seedlings away to safety as long as you can.

Eventually, with just a little luck, you can avoid being wiped out long enough to build up an undefeatable seedling army. Gaining access to the reinforcements in the perimeter asteroids is crucial. If you find yourself isolated and weak-in-number on an outer asteroid, just quit and start over.

Thank you.  Ive tried 8 times so far and have gotten to the far  asteriod once, got some help but they swooped in and kicked my ass and put up defense trees. For some reason this level is kicking my ass every time. I've played every day for a week with same results. No other level has been this difficult. I guess I'll keep trying

Okay, I'm done.  I've been playing this same level for a week now. Something's not right about this.  I've beat all the skirmish areas on Challenging difficulty and Dark Matter Mode on Challenging difficulty through level 17.  I hear you tell me this has been fixed, but I sure can't tell.  I really like this game, but I'm giving it a thumbs down because of this.

I followed the above advice.  Through some luck and timing, I had 38 seeds and jumped over to another of the large asteroids after the enemies fought each other instead of attacking me.  I took and immediately went to the small asteriod behind and got reinforcements. I survived a couple attacks, which further weakened my opponents.  I then went for another big asteriod and it was pretty much over after that.  I got lucky because they didn't wipe me out before I could get started, they didn't throw up a bunch of defense trees and they didn't harass me to the point I was too weak to do anything

Interesting, none of the videos were on the ipad (obviousfrom the mouse clicking graphic/sound). What I noticed was that in the videos the AI is far less aggressive and planted far fewer Dyson. I wonder if this is a difference from console to IOS version?

I just wanted to add my frustration about this level.  This game has been a joy to play until now (playing on iPhone), and there is nothing more frustrating playing a game than playing a level that is ridiculously hard.  I've employed all the stated strategies and nothing has worked, and of course now the game is over for me because I can't move on until I beat the level.

Awesome game, unfortunately the level of frustration caused by this level forces me to rate it a one star on iTunes.....sorry.

First thing - ask us for support if you're stuck! If you're your struggling in a level it's a tactical problem. We provide a hint but in this case (l18) one or two are still struggling. Rudolf is going to do a walk through for it and we will update the app to make it easier on easy mode.

The problem for us is that it's also other people's favourite level, and we get comments about being too easy.

It's a little annoying to have someone play that deep into the game, to the point where it is meant to be harder, and then to get one star. It's your choice but it affects us and our sales so it is frustrating.

Remember you can skip this level at any time - options -unlock.

Attached is a DLL that replaces your existing levels.dll with a fixed level 18 that should stop the enemy planting a tree on the asteroid they come from as they leave it.

Back up your original levels.dll before using this one.

Please let me know if you have trouble with this file!

Thanks.
