Install From Scratch
« on: July 26, 2010, 03:25:16 AM »
Hello fellow gardeners,

I wanted to reset Eufloria to factory settings since I wanted to check all these things from the beginning.

First I deleted just the user.settings file.

Then I noticed that the times of the campaign levels apparently weren’t being recorded (dev mode -> stats info).

I thought that maybe I’d make a mistake, so I uninstalled Eufloria and completely removed all associated folders and files everywhere, including those folders/files which are only been shown in Vista if you click the button named “Compatibility Files” (my translation, my Vista is localized German). So, clean install and updates and all.

This doesn’t seem to be as straightforward as I’d wish—OK, I may have made mistakes.

First I installed my purchased version of 2.00, then I applied the latest 2.05 patch. Then some things didn’t seem to work, but stupidly I didn’t save the error message(s). Then I removed and installed anew, this time successively using all those single update patches I’d saved. This time everything worked.

I’d wish for patches always to make clear whether they are “delta” patches, e.g. only update vers. 2.04 to 2.05, or whether they are “combo” updates which include all former updates so they’d update any 2.0x version to 2.05.

Since, up to now, size shouldn’t matter a lot I’d prefer combo update patches since they could always repair things that may have gone awry in the update history.

Greetings, Tom

I'm not sure but I think I read in another thread that 2.05 doesn't record time correctly yet, that it would be fixed with the next patch.

Also, the game saves your data in 3 files now, not just user.settings.

Achievement.bin records what honourifics you unlocked.
Stats.bin saves your times, number of enemy killed, lost seedlings found, battle length, tree lost and all that stuff.

Thank you blueskirt42!

Would you please also tell me where would I find the file Achievements.bin?

TIA Tom

All 3 files can be found in the Eufloria\Resources folder.

I just deleted them to verify if doing so damage the game but it doesn't seem to. It just resets your progression, I was able to get achievements just fine after deleting them.

All these three files will be regenerated by the game if you remove them - the game is not supplied with them and creates them as needed (the Achievements file isn't created until you get one I think).

After a couple of patches, I stopped doing delta patches as the patch files were so small anyway. As far as I know, the 2.05 patch should patch Eufloria 2.0 up to 2.05, but I guess I may have left some stuff out... If you need to you can get the latest version of the full installer by requesting a download code from your order email or whatever, just let me know your order number and I'll send one out.

Thank you, but no file “Achievements.bin” in that folder :o

BTW, funny thing is that I have two instances of “Stats.bin” and “User.settings”:

- one in C:\Program Files\Eufloria\Resources
- one in C:\Users\tom\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Eufloria\Resources

And no “Achievements.bin” in that other Resources folder :o

BTW how I found that other Resources folder: When in C:\Program Files\Eufloria\Resourcesm I pressed the button “Compatibility Files” (Vista).

I would not call myself an experienced Windows user, my “native” OS is Mac OS X (actually was CP/M; long story ;)), so please bear with me. I would, though call myself a very experienced Mac user, and anyway, I know Windows since it didn’t even exist, MS.DOS and DR.DOS … memories … punching holes in cardboard cards at school for that Wang computer … later Atari, Amiga, at university Xerox Star, SmallTalk and Lisp … but I let myself be carried away ;)

OK, so I checked my direct2drive account, d’loaded 2.0.5 installer, installed, and still no “Achievements.bin” and no Honourifics though I made sure that I …

Thanks for the offer, as I wrote above I just d’loaded 2.05 from my direct2drive acct. Modification date of that file is an hour later than the 2.05 patch, so I felt sure.

<sigh> Anything I can do on my side of the wire? What’s this thing with user.settings and stats.bin duplicating in “Compatibility Files”?

Absolutely no idea what that other folder is. Some Windows system stuff maybe.

I need to get a patch out to fix the level time stuff. That's really stupid of me. And you say you are not being awarded the "Traveler" achievement?

You're saying that you uninstalled and cleaned out the game, installed the 2.05 version from D2D, and now the game won't award you any achievements at all?

Well, this time I didn’t uninstall and clean install 2.05 but instead installed 2.05 over the old version, but I didn’t get any achievements awarded though I clearly met the conditions.

BUT: Meanwhile I have cleaned out everything, and I mean EVERYTHING and then made a clean install of 2.0.5.

NO stats being saved except for the first time. NO user settings being saved except for the first time.

I have an idea what may be the problem and will write about it and how I solved it, but have to do a little more research so I can provide you w/ URLs for English websites concerned with this topic.

Hint: UAC, User Account Control

Ugh, I got rid of UAC as soon as I realised it was possible. Sense is better than a blanket 'are you sure?' every time you want to do anything more 'dangerous' than turn your computer on.

Eufloria should have the right to save to its own Resources folder - it was an early problem we managed to solve due to helpful forum members. It's a shame that it seems that certain computers are denying access to this directory even after the app has permission...

So … I’d been offline for two weeks shortly after posting in this thread, and in during that time I reinstalled Eufloria several times (!), and suddenly Eufloria saved its stats and prefs in this folder:

C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Eufloria\Resources

No idea why there is this inconsistency (and I’ll spare you from the Windows rant I wrote elsewhere ;)).

No double files as I had described above. And still no honourifics—after each reinstallation I’ve played the game from beginning to level 25,
(click to show/hide)
but still no achievements/honourifics.

I am willing to do a clean install and play from the beginning ONE more time if anybody has a solution for this, but slowly I am getting bored of those lower levels.

Any idea how to solve this?

TIA, Tom

Using developer mode and the cheat console, you can get through the game faster. 1000 super seedlings and 16* speed means it doesn't take long to get through the game.

I can't solve the other issue, but if you've completed the game, you've earned the use of a faster way to do it.

Thanks @Ytaker, I very often play using dev mode and acceleration, probably due to ADD and not taking my prescribed Ritalin ;D

But regarding the cheat console … haven’t tried that yet, I guess it’s time I do so soon. Thank you!

Cheers, Tom
