Unexplained crash
« on: March 30, 2009, 03:15:16 AM »
I have Windows XP, and when I play level one of the game I can only conquer four or five asteroids before I get an error message and the game shuts down. What's going on?

AMATEUR! You should try hacking into his PC to do a test run yourself :P

Among my first guesses - HDD space, memory, conflicting processes. Check that you've actually got the resources to run Dyson - it's a hefty game.

I skimmed the reqs before I installed but I can't find them again (unless, I guess, I reinstall.) This time I got to two planets in level two before it crashed on me.

First of all, I would like to say that this is an amazing game. I was able to play it a couple times (all in during one day, did not shut down my computer in between). But now when i open dyson.exe or any shortcut, it goes to the dyson loading screen, loads to almost halfway (which is a very short amount of time on my computer) and then I get the typical microsoft message: "Dyson has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the... blah blah"
This is the error signature:

EventType: clr20r3 P1: Dyson.exe P2: 1.0.0.0 P3: 497e30cc P4: sdldotnet P5: 6.1.0.0 P6: 481a3d74 P7: 96 P8: 26 P9: sdldotnet.core.sdlexception

My Specs:
AMD 5400+ 2.8 ghz
2x 2048 mb OCZ 800mhz
Abit KN9 SLI motherboard
2x 8600 gts (evga)
80 gb seagate 7200rpm hd
1 tb western digital caviar black 7200rpm hd
250 gb western digital elements external 5400rpm hd (dyson is running on this)
Windows XP Professional 32-bit

Thanks in advance.

That's a problem with the SDL library. That's all I can tell you - in fact, I don't even know what SDL stands for, let alone what it does. I reckon it's just another case of unhandled exceptions...

Could you also post what version of .NET you have, and any patches/hotfixes you've installed? It looks like you're not the only one with the sdldotnet exception.

clr20r3 is a file not found exception. I think this is likely to be music. I need to check that the file is where I expect it is, which I may not currently do. Have you moved any of the files around or removed the music at all?

I merged the threads BTW.

No i have not changed anything, it seems to be random, as I started up my computer today and it worked fine. I'll keep you posted hopefully the problem is solved. And I was a little confused when i realized it, but then i saw how similar the problems were =].
