Dyson on Steam
« on: March 24, 2009, 01:30:48 AM »
The folks at steam know a lot about this game:

Dyson will be available through Steam. To be precise on the 31st of July 2009. The screenshots are also pretty neat.

I noticed some things that I didn't see in the game (here be the speculation part):

- The colors look stronger and easier to differentiate
- The roots look a lot smoother and rounder .. and on one pic mockingly long
- The core of the planet shines
- Planets are now also inhabited by bunnies who might eventually gnaw off your roots ;)

Supported OS will be XP, Vista and Linux, but I'm hoping the Mac Version is indeed still in the plan. And I hope there will still be a free component.

I'm not too familiar with Steam, but I guess it is pretty amazing for the devs, seeing how Darwinia, Audiosurf and World of Goo became known to and bought by a wide audience of gamers.

Please, please, please don't use Steam.  If you haven't signed anything, back out now.  Steam is buggy, bloated and annoying.  The customer service/support is non existent, and there is no Linux version.  I refuse to use Steam for anything ever again.  I would love to support Dyson, but I will not support Valve.

I am only posting as a reaction to the poster above me really, but personally speaking, i have never had any problems with steam, and have been using it since Half Life 2 came out (which required it). Customer service does take some time, so the first port of call is always the steam forums for me. If the game is popular enough the user forums will be a buzz of activity. Whilst my list of "big" games, like Doom 3, Left 4 Dead etc, that take up GBs of space are very few, the smaller "indie" games usually stay on my hard disk drive for good when downloaded. I would be very happy if a steam purchase option was available!

Also: When you play a game on steam, your steam freinds also see that you are playing the game. What better marketing ploy than to know you have freinds playing a game you've not heard of!

I approve of trying to get the game out to a larger audience.

Going with Steam seems like a pretty good idea to me.  :)

I hope it works out well guys.

Steam's a great game distribution mechanism, if you're happy with locking your games to an online service you have very little control over. Personally, I'm not - I prefer either seperate downloads or physical discs. Call me old-fashioned. I would purchase a copy of Dyson through Steam, though, were I able to. But I'm not: their payment options and my payment abilities aren't aligned.

I guess we'll see, come July.

Hey guys, Dyson will also be available through our own website and through direct2drive. We are very happy with the steam and d2d deals but are also very keen on making sure people can get it directly from us. So there will be a choice in the matter that should suit all of you :-)

Thought that I could suggest a price for a final product if I may.

Less than 8,95 USD is too low, more than 25 is too high (in my opinion)
Realistic price will be between 10,95--19,95 USD

It all depends on how much goodies will be in a final version of the game (like scenario editor, revised AI !emphasis; upgraded eyecandy, new gameplay features, strategies and tactics and so on) If you manage to get all kind of good stuff, then 20+ USD is realistic.

That of course if you choose to go with the one time payment options.

(And If a shop accepts Paypal, then it is fine by me.)

Most independent games are 10$ or 15$ on Steam. I guess this is a good price for a game like Dyson.

I am very much glad you will be selling dyson on steam. I've never had large problem with my games that was steam related, and I even re-bought bioshock when they had it on sale for 5 bucks, because the best part of steam is the security and ease of being able to install your games on any computer with an internet connection. In fact, I love steam so much, my account is worth 519.68 at this point! (well, that's not adjusted for all the sales/packages I bought games during/in)

@Alex What about direct sales? I know that a distribution partner == more sales, but would that prevent you from selling the game at the same price, directly from dyson-game.com?

I have nothing against Steam and all (excepted their latest policy regarding US$ EUR€ conversion which is a shame).
Plus if tis can boost sales for independent games, I'm all for it.

However I'd rather buy directly from dyson-game (paypal?) so that I'm sure all the money goes to the authors. ;)

We will also sell the game from here, although I have yet to investigate how to set that up. We will probably try to mimic what the 2dboy boys have done with their paypal setup :-) Althoughh I have no idea yet as to how they have set it up.

All you need apart from that is a merchant account at Paypal (connected to a mastercard). Voila.

The lower the price, the more players will buy it. 9.99 is the maximum I would pay for it, 4.99 would be an unusual low price and the people could think this game is junk. Sad but true.

I'm not even sure if they would even put a price. Maybe there would be an "Finished'' version of Dyson. Then you could buy patches for 3.95$.

Or they would release the game for free in steam. (Like Portal's demo). I don't know. It's up to you guys.

Just to be clear, we are going to sell a commercial version of Dyson for a set price. We haven't finalised the prize yet as we still working on content tot go into the final game. The commercial version will be much expanded, both in content and in features, compared to the current free version.

We are doing our best to create a high quality game that people are happy to pay for! :-D

dyson 2 :the begining?kinda reminds me of an old game called populous 3:the beginning

how about dyson 2: the world tree(like supports a campaign in which at last level you fight a collosal dyson tree that spawn ultimate seedlings that are 10 times bigger than your seeds. now that would be a kickass)

Will the steam version have multiplay? I'd assume it would be great opportunity to plan that considering steam is able to back it up with a master server.

Please use the Search function next time.

Quote from: Kaze
  • Multiplayer! Yes! This would be amazing!
  • Higher contrast between race colors; I've found myself playing against the same colour (Or similar colour) a few times.
  • A larger world! Perhaps you could include more asteroid belts? Or maybe an infinite sized game world?  <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt="" title="Laughing" />
  • Saving/loading

Multiplayer? That ... would be ... AMAZING! The only problem would be setting up a server to run the games. I don't know if you guys have any spare servers sitting around, but what could work is PC Based servers. Soldat comes packaged with a program that runs a game server on your PC while you play. The only problem is the guy that designed the game is Polish, so you might not be able to get much help from him. Of course, I'm sure you'd be able to figure it out on your own.

The infinite sized game world would be something awesome to implement too. Maybe it could scale up from Asteriod Belt>Solar System>Galaxy. Ever stage has to be accomplished from the ground up. It would afford hours upon hours of game play.

I agree. Multiplayer will be awesome but I would consider reading the quote above.

Valve would probably make dyson cost and then put the price up a bit. Thats what happened to Gary's Mod. G-mod.

As others have said, I've personally never had any trouble with Steam.
I would definitely purchase Dyson on Steam, so that I can reinstall it whenever I format my computer (which is becoming frequent, jumping between OS's).

Question: should Dyson be on steam?

My Asnwer: yes.

Though steam dose have it's moments, they are shadowed over by the accomplishments that I see it use. It is a game database where you purchase a game once and never have to worry about re purchasing it again, Just check your games list and there it is. there is only one other thing that i have seen to this but that program adds all sorts of crap to the files and makes them five times larger than the game itself (if you're wondering what the other thing is it is called Stardock). The shop browser makes it easy to quickly catogorize and search their entire list for your favorite games. And as many a video/review I have viewed/read says that it is the fastest growing online community plus they might add in Steam Achevs too! ;D

in short, keep it on steam...please....

EDIT: Stardock also makes games more expnsive than when you find them on steam.

The extent to which you will be able to control the AI is not fixed yet, but you should at least be able to make some scripted levels using Lua. Programming the AI entirely in Lua is an option, and would open the whole enemy AI up to modification. I'm not sure I have time for that though - we'll see.

Hey guys! If you distribute game on steam, you have access to steamworks, right? May be you use some features of that? Like achievements?  :)
