Wikipedia page looks crap.
« on: August 24, 2010, 02:46:23 AM »
It has warnings over the top, it's very short, and nothing links to it.

This is how a lot of people will be introduced to eufloria. One of your main sources of advertisement is simply that people view the page, and they see that it's a serious enough endevour that it's not just something knocked up in ten minutes by the developers. It is also, artisticly, an affront to the standard quality of game articles, and very weak.

    It needs-
    • A better beginning. Explanation of the basics, the developers, profits, sales. If some sort of official website source could be made for this, it would help. Definitely something about how the developers have been working on it for a long time, like released in 2008 and updated and improved regularly. That shows that the developers haven't abandoned it, implies there will be less bugs.
    • A cleaner overview. I'm gonna work a bit on this. This one is horrible. Reading it, you don't get a good understanding of the game, and it looks unprofessional.
    • A plot summary. This also serves as an advertisement- the fact that you have a plotline indicates you're a serious game, rather than just a random series of unconnected events.
    • A reception thing. If you have one, you must be serious. It should have negative reviews too. Everyone knows that there are going to be flaws in the game, and if you tell them what they are, they're more likely to buy. Unless the flaws are, the game is boring, and full of bugs, but this game doesn't have those flaws. If you don't tell them, they'll assume the worse.
    • References in other articles. People who look at indie games should be able to find this game in other wikipedia sources, and by wikipedia magic, play it.
    • Development? Game engine, support for custom maps. The fact that there's lots of custom map content should be added. The community pack addon should be noted.
I'd be grateful to anyone who did any of these things. I'm okish with wikipedia, but it's a lot of work. For a good cause though.

From the developers- you're based in the UK, aren't you?

Also, I need some sorta developer page about the plot. You fight other empires, and face some sort of grey menace- what's that supposed to be, by the way?

Edit. Looks like an advertisement. I didn't trust it when I first saw it.

We are in the UK yes, and indeed, would be delighted if it gets improved. We can't really do it as A: No time, B: It looks dodgy to write your own wikipedia entries :-D

Thanks, I used that date elsewhere for a reference.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:COI

"Adding material that appears to promote the interests or visibility of an article's author, its author's family members, employer, associates, or their business or personal interests, places the author in a conflict of interest. When editors write to promote their own interests, their contributions often show a characteristic lack of connection to anything the general reader might want to consult as a reference."

It would be extremely suspect if you edited the reception the game has received, but adding the plot is purely factual, and does not involve a conflict of interest. You are not promoting your own interests, and the information is directly relevent to what the general reader would wish to consult as a reference.

And there are lots of places where you could put a plot summary, with ease. http://www.eufloria-game.com/read.php?page=9 would be fine, say. It shouldn't take long to write. You find that grey mindless seedlings have invaded the mothertree's forest, and seek to find the source. You find they've been spread by other empires, and fight through those empires and greys to find the source of the greys. That's the general message I got.

I replayed the game. The greys are

Wikipedia site, anyone can be able to change something there if they want to, e.g., if they want to add some meaning to an specific word/term, while others who want to do a joke, they will edit some of words meaning to change it even if its not the real meaning of that word.. :)
