[Map] Project Asteroids
« on: January 29, 2010, 10:45:11 PM »
Project Asteroids v.0.5
Currently a Prototype, much more to be added, etc.. in a later release!

Project Asteroids is a map/level addon that will (of course when 100% finished) generate dynamic maps to play on.

Check it out (See Attachment Below) and let me know what you think. I am still working on it, but so far it is working fairly well. I have only started tinkering with this game yesterday, however I am not new to LUA specifically.

Recommend trying it out default before digging around in the LUA code. However, if you decide to mess around with the config, you can find it up top of the LUA file, simply edit and read the comments for each setting to better understand what it will change.

PS. I had read that the Name function (To set a name for an Asteroid) does not work, anyone know if there is any fix being made for that or? Did not see it listed for "Next Patch"

I still need to read up on many of the min/max values, though the list I had seen is missing a lot of information.

Anyhow, Much more options to be added and improvements to be made :) Enjoy!

Cool, hope you enjoy what you see of it so far. Will be working on an improved version, no ETA on next version but as soon as I get something ready, will release :) (of course between work/family)

This is a really cool idea, and a great example of the awesomely powerful modding potential of the game :>  I will try this out this weekend.   Thanks for sharing !

Thnx and No prob :)

There are a few quarks with v.0.5, but they should be addressed with the next release. The main purpose of the current 0.5 is just a preview/prototype release of the level. Working on a lot of new features, improvements, etc.. Might be a bit before I release the next one just to be sure things are working properly as I will no doubt have to do a lot of play testing. Also might be offline for a bit this coming month, times being hard and the electric bill over powers the mighty Internet bill currently. Regardless, I can easily work on the level while offline. Expect good things from this level though :):)

I like this a lot.  This is a good framework for a general skirmish mode for the game, by tweaking the variables in your setup you could easily make this more difficult or easier depending on the challenge desired.  The first time I tried it out though I ended up with four asteroids and 2 trees and about 17 seedlings spread around and I quickly found myself surrounded and overwhelmed but the second time I had enough seedlings to actually plant some trees and get going.  Haven't won yet (its going in the background as I write this actually) but it looks to be a fun challenge.

I've looked around in the Lua code a little bit and couldn't tell right off the bat but it seemed like the stronger asteroids had lower tree limits than the weaker ones and I was wondering if that was a design choice or just coincidence from the two times I've played your map so far?

Nice job though, can't wait for another release!

:), so far things are working nicely with the next version of it. It will be a bit before I release it, mainly due to my timing on picking up on this game. Having a bit of financial issues, needless to say, these past 2 months of winter have caused me some pain in the electric bill area and it could not have happened at a worse time. I had lost my job not long ago due to layoffs so I have to crunch some expenses until next month. I have new job of course, I just do not make nearly as much as I used to so money is tight. I am letting my net go this month, I will be back no doubt and will be working on this addon while offline as well. I hope to have things sorted out and my net back at least by next month. That is the plan at least :) Just letting you guys know so you do not think i've abandoned my project here. Just some bad timing on my part :P ISP will most likely cut me off today or tomarrow as I am scheduled for disconnect. (was supposed to be cut off last week, but snow storms delayed that :))

The issue your experiencing is not by choice, at least not my choice. Much of the values except for the ones you can choose are still random from the games default function value so can be considered a design flaw on my part (at least for 0.5) Next version will have this ironed out and working better so you do not have that happen anymore. There are a few little quarks like that but will be addressed :) Anyhow, hopefully when I get back from being offline a bit, will have a nice version I can call "release" instead of just a short framework/template of a level :)

Hey Crypton,

I’ve played your map a LOT and I enjoyed it, although sometimes this graphics glitch (see somewhere else here) forced me to play zoomed in more than I’d prefer.

Anyway: GREAT Map, thank you! And I certainly hope that you turn up here again and give us more sweet maps :)

<edit>

Oh, I just read your last post and I dearly hope that you’ve got your problems solved meanwhile. That’s more important than any new maps, BTW. You should fersure have a job, good and well-paid, as you seem gifted and enthusiastic. I wish you all good luck you can take, and some more!

</edit>

Cheers, Tom

I had made a much better version, but I am having problems locating it. I will have to dig around through my backups. Been offline so long I think I forgot what I had planned on even doing with my level :(

Anyhow, I am online now, not sure if I will work on my level right away or not, but I will be around at least currently. If I can manage to find the later version of it I will most likely get it to a release status. Sorry I had been offline so long, bills, etc.. just moved as well recently - you know how it goes.

Well, I think I need to find my game purchase first before I can even think about mapping again, now that I think about it, I do not recall what email I used to register the game or even where I put my game :S Life, gotta love it.

Yes, I indeed know how it can go. Don’t worry too much about those old projects, just nice to “have” you back again ;)

Take your time … and maybe Alex or Rudolf can be of help re: the game purchase?

Alex was very generous and fixed me back up with the game, so just wanted to give a shout out to him and say thanks very much!

I will work on the map a bit here and there, more when I do have more free time. I found a newer version of the map, however, it is not the one I was looking for - I have begun messing with it, I hope to find the other version I had, but if not at least I have something newer than the one I had initially released.

I also found a few things I had been working on, but I will have to get them online to show you all. It was a project i had started, but never worked on too much after going offline. I hope to pick it back up as well. Anyhow, more on that later :)

Heh, just yesterday night I played Project Asteroids with the new Defaults.xml file. Was a lot of fun even if towards the end that ugly graphics bug annoyed me quite a bit with its large white circles as soon as “too many” (?) Seedlings and Asteroids are in sight; zooming in helped, though.

Do the new defauls make the level more fun you reckon?
Also, sorry about the bug, if you haven't already please report it in the bugs thread. :-)

@Rudolf: Yes, I *think* it was more fun using the new Default.xml file. As are the normal levels.

And about the bug, yes, I have reported it in the bugs thread, along with screenshots.

@Alex: Oh yes, please, it would help a LOT if you could fix that.

Excellent!
Regarding the AI, that will become even better when:
A: I start optimising the levels themselves to work well with the new settings.
B: We introduce some code that will improve the AI a LOT.

Thanks again for all your tireless testing and feedback and forum work. Seriously cool and helpful dude!

Played this great map with 2.0.6, the graphics glitch seems to be gone, but now the game doesn’t end after I conquered all asteroids :o
