Revert to non-HD style controls in Eufloria HD
« on: November 22, 2012, 11:02:46 AM »
I ended up with a copy of both Eufloria HD thanks to the latest Humble Bundle 4 for Android and I look the looks of the "HD" versions graphics updates but I was wondering if there was a way to use the mouse controls from the Original game in the HD version. The new controls require much more clicking and feel a heck of a lot less fluid than the controls from the original game. I understand the reasons for the change with the need to support touch screens and the like, but on PC the old controls felt much smoother.

Would this be possible as a mod perhaps, and if so I'd be willing to look into making it myself if pointed to the proper documentation.

I loved the original game and would love to be able to play the updated version but the new control scheme just bugs the heck out of me and makes my game play feel much much slower.

EDIT: It seems the second post in the Suggestions thread covers just about everything I had to say. I'll leave this post just to help others who might be searching the forum with the same thought.

Yes! Too much clickety-click gives me RSI.

For example: PLEASE let me just pluck off flowers and Laser Mines as it was before … why force me to click somewhere else?

For example: PLEASE let me right-click to send of a scout seedling to an asteroid as it was before … why force me to click somewhere else?

yep we know. :-)

Just to reiteratee, the HIB build is  a pre-release build, as in, we have yet to launch HD PC formally. So far this is what we had time for, and we will definitely make the controls more streamlined for the official release.

Please compile a list of things like this so we have a lot of feedback to work with.
As always we love you guys/gals and listen carefully to feedback.

:-)

Plucking: you can use a pluck gesture as you can on touch. Left click the flower and move the mouse slightly.

Scouting: left click-drag to a target asteroid as usual then tap the right button to send a scout. The targeting circle will still exist but a scout will be sent. Left click another asteroid the right click again - scout.

Also, what rudolf said! This is a beta to get compatibility issues out the way and to get feedback on things like controls. We knew previous advanced users would want some of those original controls but we couldn't get them in  the beta. Also to give mac and Linux owners a go :)

Yeah, I know ot’s a pre-release.

But …

I thought that’s what we’re doing here?

Where else should I post this stuff?

And thanks, sillytuna, great to know! Must immediately check this with the last Skirmish Arena, and then I’m through w/ all levels in Eufloria HD, I think the fastest I’ve ever been in Dyson/Eufloria.

I think it's more that we've said from the start that the advanced controls will go back in for the full release but we can't do anything until then (or at least until we beta it). It was never a case of not doing it, it's just not in the pre-release since it's just that, a pre-release. Not the final thing.

We're looking for new ideas, tech issues (like some of the Mac stuff that came up), that sort of thing.

Guess we should have made it clear!

Oh the fun of pre-releases, especially when you have another game to finish before going back to it!

I should add that the pre-release was a requirement of the Android bundle, otherwise it would have been in beta next year with controls already done. Saying that, it's good that Mac and Linux owners can play now, and that the PC version has been updated as per PS3 (more or less).

Edit: We've been doing horrendous hours to get this out at all hence a bit of tiredness. To say it was close to the wire is an understatement. Mac and Linux very nearly didn't happen. We've also been trying to do it with a minimum of bugs all things considered, and I don't think we've done too badly.

I think the issue is that it wasn't made clear that it was a prerelease, I wasn't aware of that until I visited the site directly. Perhaps should have the humble bundle people put something on the download page, or even have a message on the menu screen of the game itself saying its a pre-release check back for updates and the final version or similar.

It says in the readme.pdf and explains it all.

We did want them to say beta or prerelease I have to say!

By the time we knew it wasn't going to be known as that, we couldn't do anything about it. Anyway, it's a solid version, it's just not got everything we want in it as we're fussy!

It's actually identical to the iOS and Android builds. In fact, iOS is a little behind - we just submitted an iOS update.

No worries! We weren't clear enough and, as has been pointed out, it would have been better if the beta was named as such for the bundle. Was the plan, didn't happen!

Right, do keep posting ideas and comments, including control ones.

Meanwhile, we're on eufloria adventures.

Btw: there is a mac build due with cmd-q requested ;) The data storage location is an apple requirement for the app store apparently. Why they chose to 'hide' the library folder...

[..] Why they chose to 'hide' the library folder...
I’m an Apple fanboi fersure :D but not an apologist. Nevertheless: I guess it has got to do with an increasing support load due to the growing number of n00b users who went there and muddled up things. Usually it’s not necessary to go there, and IF one does and fumbles around, one should know what one’s doing.

Also, the information on how to get to the Library folders (the global one and the user’s) is easy to find: Just click the “Help” menu and choose “Help Center”, there enter “library” in the search field and hit return.

Quote from: Help Center
What is the Library folder?
The Library folder contains files used by Mac OS X and your applications, including your personal fonts and preferences. The Library folder is hidden. If you need to open it, make sure you are in the Finder, hold down the Option key, and then choose Go > Library.”

The only time a user usually needs to go to the Library folder is when one wants to add fonts by hand (“dumb user” way is to use the OS X Font Book app), and power users who want to do it by hand already know how to find it.

See here for more info about the Library and 19 (nineteen!) ways to make it permanently visible.

Also, once you have the Library folder, you can pull the (sort of) favicon in the Finder title bar of the folder and pull it into the sidebar for easy access.

Greetings, Tom
